WebThe wattle-necked softshell is a highly aquatic, omnicarnivorous turtle, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, fish and other aquatic vertebrates (McKeown and Webb, 1982; Ernst and Barbour, 1989; Ernst et al., 1994; McKeown, 1996). In Hawaii, McKeown (1996) observed a P. steindachneri eating a nonindigenous toad, Bufo marinus. The species became known to Western science in 1873, when John Edward Gray, the turtle expert at the British Museum, described the specimen sent to him from Shanghai by English biologist Robert Swinhoe. He named the species Oscaria swinhoei, and described it as "the most beautiful species of Trionychidae that has yet occurred."
