The monument lies in arable farmland on the summit of a ridge, at around 100m OD. It comprises a ring-ditch measuring about 18m in overall diameter with the ditch measuring some 2m wide.

In 1659 the castle was renamed Stanley House in honour of the wedding of John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl and Lady Stanley.
